al spaces in Berlin: the Spiegelsaal (Mirror Hall) upstairs at
Clärchens Ballhaus

19th-century ballroom right in the heart of the Scheunenviertel. From roughly
September to June, a small crowd of clued-in fans gathers at 7pm on Sundays amid
the faded elegance of this historic room to listen to piano concerts, opera recitals,
string quartets and other musical offerings.
With its cracked and blinded mirrors, elaborate chandeliers and old-timey wallpa-
per, the hall recalls the decadence of past eras when it was the domain of the city's
elite, while the common folks hit the planks in the ballroom downstairs.
For upcoming concerts, check the website or call ahead. It's possible to make reser-
vations, but there are no assigned seats, so come early. In July and August perform-
ances are free and held outdoors against the glorious backdrop of the Bodemuseum
on Museumsinsel (8.30pm, weather permitting).
