at reasonable prices. The all-you-can-eat breakfast in the restaurant section is a
real bargain. The restaurant has an expansive but relatively inexpensive luncheon-
and-dinner menu featuring many Swedish specialties (closed during July).
Across the street from Central Station, along the street Vasagatan, you can find
a number of excellent food facilities ranging from fast to fancy.
Train information is displayed on digital boards and is readily available
throughout the station, including key positions just inside the main entrance and
again in the corridors leading to the track areas. The office is in the main con-
course to the left of the main exit. Hours: 0600-2300 Monday-Saturday,
0700-2300 Sunday. Local train information, usually for commuter trains, is dis-
played by a bank of large-screen, closed-circuit television sets.
Train reservations can be made in a large ticket office located in the main hall
to the right as you proceed from the track area. A sign, FARDBILJETTER
PLATSBILJETTER , identifies it. Take a queue number for seat reservations and
sleeping-car accommodations. Hours: 0600-2200 Monday-Friday, 0600-1900
Saturday, 0800-2100 Sunday.
Rail pass validation should be completed before making your first train trip.
Operating personnel aboard the trains can validate the pass, but they are re-
quired to charge for the service. Validation is free in any regular railway station.
In Stockholm's Central Station, use the window marked international tickets to
the right of the main exit.
Money exchange is located in the main station concourse and to the right of the
main exit as you proceed from the track area. The office displays the regular
pictograph sign plus one reading FOREX (exchange office). Hours: 0700-2100
daily.
Hotel reservations can be made at Stockholm Information Service, located in
the main station concourse next to the post office. Look for the sign
HOTELLCENTRAL TURISTINFORMATION. Tel: (08) 789 24 90; Fax: (08) 791 86 66; E-
mail: hotels@svb.stockholm.se. Hours: June-August: 0900-1900 daily;
September-May: 0900-1800 daily. Advance booking is free. Advance payment
is accepted to assure that the hotel or pension will hold your room until your ar-
rival. If your accommodations are located some distance from the train station,
this can be a welcomed service.
