Arriving by Train
Stockholm has several suburban stations, but international trains stop only at the
main rail station in the center of the city, Stockholm Central. All excursions out of
Stockholm depart from Stockholm Central Station.
Stockholm's Central Station is modern, well organized, and easy to move about
in. International trains usually arrive on track No. 17 or 18.
Luggage carts: Insert a SEK 10 coin in the lock; coin will be refunded upon re-
turning the cart to a rack.
The Central Station is close to several major hotels and directly connected to
the Stockholm subway (the Tunnelbanan ). The main taxi stand is across the street
from the railway station.
The station does an excellent job of moving its passengers to and from the
trains. It also provides a full complement of services for the traveler. An arcade of
shops, on the lower station level in the proximity of the exits from track Nos. 17 and
18, provides all types of foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco, newspapers, and so forth.
The Konsum —Sweden's answer to the American supermarket—is a good place
to restock your larder. It is located in the same area within the station. There are
also shops in the main station-concourse area where you may purchase food and
soft drinks.
The station's food-service facilities range from a cafeteria to a restaurant with its
own gambling casino. The cafeteria is located on the main level of the station to
the far right as you stand looking into the station from the train exit. It can be iden-
tified by its sign, CAFE OASEN. Cafeteria service is continuous 0630 to 2330 Monday
through Saturday and 0700 to 2330 Sunday; it is a good place to have breakfast,
lunch, or dinner.
The Centralens Restaurang (restaurant) Orientexpressen has the previously
mentioned casino. You'll see its sign on the right side of the station as you exit from
the track area. The complex also includes a pub and a restaurant with good food
