In-Depth Information
In addition to sightseeing in Berchtesgaden and its immediate surroundings,
there are many interesting guided tours that can be taken outside of the village.
The most popular ones for North Americans are visits to Obersalzberg, the Salt
Mines, the Königssee, the Sound of Music/Salzburg Tour, and the Eagle's Nest.
All tours are available year-round with the exception of the Eagle's Nest, which is
open from mid-May to mid-October.
The Obersalzberg tour features a visit to the former location of the Berghof,
Adolf Hitler's official home and the site of many pre-World War II conferences. In-
cluded on the tour is a trip through its air-raid shelters and bunkers, which provided
protection to the conferees in the event that the Allied air forces wanted to disrupt
the proceedings. Visit www.obersalzberg.de .
The Salt Mines are located a few miles outside the town of Berchtesgaden. If
you have chronic respiratory problems, you may sigh a breath of relief in the spe-
cially treated air of the new curative salt mine tunnel. The guided tour is a thrilling
experience. In miner's protective clothing, you ride a mine train, slide down chutes,
and cross over subterranean lakes. What an adventure! Visit www.salzzeitreise.de .
Open 0900-1700 in the summer, 1100-1500 November-April. Admission €16.00
adults, €9.50 children under 16.
