motor and, in the silence of the lake, lets go with a blast on a trumpet that resounds
and resounds for as many as seven times off the alpine palisades surrounding the
lake.
The Eagle's Nest tour begins in May and is conducted daily in summer only.
A bus conveys you to a height of 5,600 feet, where an elevator lifts you the final
400 feet to a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Despite the publicity gained by the
Eagle's Nest's connection with Adolf Hitler, he visited there only about five times.
The road running to the elevator that takes you to the summit is beyond doubt a
uniquely daring feat of road building. It's a white-knuckle ride all the way. The tour
itself is far less strenuous than that of the Salt Mines, but the weather is all import-
ant. Visit www.kehlsteinhaus.de .
Despite its ancient facade, Berchtesgaden is actually very modern in its tourist
and recreational facilities. Should its charm overcome you—as it does
many—consider an overnight stay. The Berchtesgadener Land tourist information
office, opposite the rail station, can assist you in finding accommodations.
For lunchtime try the Gasthof Neuhaus, opposite the fountain in the town
square. Its selection of Schmankerl (Bavarian specialties) is a treat, and its ice
cream will make you forget all about Baskin-Robbins.
