Notes: To reach the tourist information office, cross the street in front of the station
at the traffic light and incline to the left, following the KONIGSSEE sign. The office is
located in a large cream-colored building on the right-hand side.
Don't let the train time to Berchtesgaden deter you from making this day excursion.
The train follows a route that passes through some of the most beautiful coun-
tryside in the world, and the tours waiting for your arrival in Berchtesgaden are
simply out of this world.
After Adolf Hitler seized power in 1934, he ordered the expansion of the facilities
in Obersalzberg, an appendage to Berchtesgaden, with the intent of making it the
equivalent of a summer White House. His dream was destroyed, however, when
the greater part of Obersalzberg was demolished by an air attack on April 25, 1945.
If possible, take the early train out of Munich so you will have ample time to se-
lect a tour and have a relaxing lunch in one of Berchtesgaden's charming inns.
Current schedules are always posted in the main hall of the station.
The village of Berchtesgaden has many attractions. Among them is the Folk Mu-
seum housed in the Adelsheim Castle (Schloss Adelsheim), where you will find
displays of wood carvings and the famous Berchtesgaden wood-shaving boxes.
For one of the most spectacular scenic views in the world, take the Jennerbahn
two-person cable cars to the top of Mount Jenner above Lake Königssee (literally
translated “Royal Lake”). Start from the valley station at Lake Königssee. Your
breathtaking, 20-minute ascent to 1,834 meters (6,017 feet) unveils vistas of
mountain summits stretching as far as the eye can see. This wondrous landscape
once caused Bavarian writer Ludwig Ganghofer to cry out: “Lord, if you love any-
one, then set them down in this land!”
