Getting Around in Berlin
One of the first things visitors should do on arrival in Berlin is acquaint themselves
with the city's phenomenal fast-train system—the S-Bahn (“S” is for schnell —fast)
and the U-Bahn (underground train or subway). During rush hours, trains run every
3 to 5 minutes and approximately every 5 to 10 minutes at other times. The S- and
U-Bahn systems are augmented by trams and buses. Standard tickets ( Ein-zel-
fahrschein ) for all forms of Berlin transportation cost €2.30; day ticket, €6.30.
The Berlin Welcome Card provides 48 or 72 hours of free travel on all buses
and trains operating within the A, B, and C fare zones of the Berlin and Potsdam
public transport network (BVG) for only €18.50 (48 hours) or €25.50 (72 hours).
Purchase the card at all BVG ticket offices, tourist information offices, and at many
Berlin hotels. The card also includes vouchers for discounts of up to 50 percent
at more than 120 museums, sightseeing tours, theaters, restaurants, and other at-
tractions.
