France having been a major colonial nation, Paris has long-
established North African and Asian restaurants throughout
the city. Although Asian restaurants and traiteurs are found
in most arrondissements , the 13 e is known for its inexpensive
Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, as is Belleville in
the 19 e (also popular for its North African restaurants).
Inexpensive Indian and Pakistani establishments are
found in and around the Passage Brady in the 10 e, and
Japanese restaurants around rue Sainte-Anne in the 2 e .
My favourites:
(Chinese) 5 e : Mirama; 17 rue Saint-Jacques;
tel: 01.43.54.71.77. Lines spill out of the door for its excellent
dumpling and noodle soups, as well as the roast duck
and pork.
(Italian) 12 e : Sardegna a Tavola; 1 rue de Cotte;
tel: 01.44.75.03.28. Authentic Sardinian specialties in an
attractive Italian-style setting. Always crowded, reservations
are necessary.
(Lebanese) 16 e : Noura; 21 avenue Marceau;
tel: 01.47.20.33.33. Authentic Middle Eastern specialties
such as hummus, tabouleh, marinated meat dishes and
good Lebanese desserts. Other addresses. Open till late.
(North African) 17 e : Fradji; 42 rue Poncelet;
tel: 01.47.54.91.40. Tunisian kosher restaurant with
excellent couscous, welcoming service and a lively
atmosphere. Moderate prices.
(Pan-Asian) 13 e : Tricotin; 15 avenue de Choisy;
tel: 01.45.84.74.44. Crowded, noisy, cheap, fast and
excellent. Pick and choose from Chinese and Vietnamese
dishes, a wide choice available for soups and appetisers.
(Tex-Mex) 16 e : Susan's Place; 9 rue de l'Annonciation;
tel: 01.45.20.8816. Probably the most well-known of the
Tex-Mex places in Paris.
(Thai) 7 e : Le Petit Thiou; 3 rue Surcouf; tel: 01.40.62.96.70.
Reasonably priced, modern restaurant serving excellent
dishes. Lower-priced but of the same quality as its more
upmarket, famous parent Thiou around the corner at 49
quai d'Orsay (tel: 01.40.62.96.70). Closed on Sundays.
