: l'Huitrier; 16 rue Saussier-Leroy; tel: 01.40.54.83.44.
Some of the best oysters in Paris, excellent fish dishes
and good value for money in a little neighbourhood
treasure. Hidden in a narrow street near the market at
rue Poncelet.
Brasseries
Brasserie
means 'brewery'.
Brasseries
began serving beer
in the 17th century, and toward the end of the last century,
started offering hearty Alsatian sausages and
choucroute
(sauerkraut), plus Alsatian Riesling and Gewurtztraminer
wines. Current
brasseries
tend to serve simple, light meals
and fresh fish, usually nicely presented and reasonably priced.
Bright, lively and bustling,
brasseries
often remain open all
day and stay open late. It is highly recommended to reserve
in advance for the more popular ones. Pay attention to the
decor: some look like traditional beer houses while others have
an inviting Belle Epoque decor or Art Deco wood panelling
and interesting glass and mirrors. See
Cafés, bars, brasseries

Yellow Pages

: Bouillon Racine; 3 rue Racine; tel: 01.44.32.15.60.
A stunningly beautiful Art Nouveau
brasserie
, serving both
Belgian and French specialties and a variety of interesting
beers on tap. On some nights it can get crowded and hectic
around 9:00 pm, so be prepared to wait; or go earlier.

e
: Le Petit Lutétia; 107 rue de Sèvres; tel: 01.45.48.33.53.
Tourists may have found this charming
brasserie
, but the
locals still come for the chalkboard specials, the
confit
de canard
(preserved duck), the friendly
accueil
and the
reasonable prices. Open till late.

: Le Train Bleu, located in the Gare de Lyon;
tel: 01.43.43.09.06. It may be in a train station, but you'll
wish the train would never come. A beautiful Belle Epoque
dining room, with frescoes on the ceilings, murals on the
walls and classic French cuisine. Certainly not cheap, but
a worthwhile Paris experience, to be sure.

Old-time Paris, modern oysters and seafood platters,
crowded, noisy and fun. Stays open late.
