In-Depth Information
PAL simplifies analysis of large volumes of data or can be useful for comparing performance data from
different systems. The development cycle is short; consequently new and better versions are regularly
available. A GUI version has been recently released that builds the command line instead of the user
having to construct this. PAL uses LogParser, which must be installed on the system, and it currently
supports Windows XP, Vista, and Windows Server 2003 all with Office Web Components installed.
PAL uses a traffic light system to flag areas for attention within the performance logs, and summarizes
these really nicely in an HTML page. Clearly the relevance of the traffic light system is dependent on
you customizing the suggested thresholds to those that will be meaningful within your environment.
Figure 2-7 provides an illustration of the type of output you can expect.

With the recently released GUI and much momentum behind the project, future releases promise to
make this tool even more powerful and easier to use. Combined with contributions from the open source
