beautiful nineteenth-century theatre designed by Axel Nyström. All the main banks,
shops and stores are in the grid of streets on either side of Norra Kungsgatan and Norra
Rådmansgatan; the Resecentrum is about 700m to the east.
Gävle Slott
Follow the river west from the Länsmuséet Gävleborg to the double bridges of
Rådmansbron and Kungsbron and you'll come to Gävle Slott , the seventeenth-century
residence of the county governor, which lost its ramparts and towers years ago and now
lurks behind a row of trees like some minor country house. However, it's not open to
the public.
The warehouses
From the train station, look across the tracks and you'll see the beginnings of an
industrial area. Home to three parallel streets of old dock-side warehouses , of Norra
Skeppsbron just by the river, it's a reminder of the days when ships unloaded coffee and
spices in the centre of Gävle. To get to the warehouses, use the subway to head under
the railway tracks, and walk east to the riverside. Today, with company names
emblazoned on the red, wooden fronts of the empty buildings, the area feels more like a
Hollywood movie set than a Swedish town. Continue to the far eastern end of the
warehouses and the heady smell of roasting coffee becomes ever stronger: Gevalia has its
production centre here right next to the harbour at Nyhamn, north off Norra
Skeppsbron.

On a rainy day (or even a fine one) you may find yourself contemplating the Sveriges
Järnvägsmuseum or Swedish Railway museum. Located in what used to be Gävle's
engine shed, it's a train enthusiast's paradise, stuffed to the gills with really old
locomotives and information on SJ's pride and joy, the X2000. The highlight is the
hunting coach dating from 1859; one of the world's oldest railway carriages, it once
belonged to King Karl XV.
Boulognerskogen park
West of the city centre and a twenty-minute stroll down picturesque Kungsbäcksvägen,
a narrow street lined with brightly painted wooden houses beginning at Heliga
Trefaldighets kyrka, you'll come to the rambling nineteenth-century park,
Boulognerskogen . It's a good place for a picnic and a spot of sunbathing or a visit to
the music pavilions, open-air café or the sculpture, by Carl Milles, of five angels
playing musical instruments.
Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka
Kaplansgatan • Mon-Fri 11am-3pm
From Gävle Slott , a short walk west following the river leads to a wooden bridge, across
which is Kaplansgatan and the Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka , the Church of the Holy
Trinity, a seventeenth-century masterpiece of woodcarved decoration: check out the
pulpit, towering altarpiece and screen, each the superb work of the German craftsman,
Ewardt Friis.
