Around Halmstad
Halmstad is perfectly placed for a quick jaunt to some of southern Sweden's most
glorious beaches - sweeping strands of golden sand which are surprisingly busy during
the short summer months - in addition to the Mjellby Konstmuseum , which offers art
lovers a chance to appreciate the work of the well-known (in Sweden, at least)
Halmstad Group.
The Mjellby Konstmuseum
Mjällby • July & Aug Tues-Sun 11am-5pm; Sept-June Tues-Sun noon-5pm • 60kr • W mjellbykonstmuseum.se • Take bus #330 and
alight at the bus stop called “Mjällby”
Five kilometres north of Halmstad is the Mjellby Konstmuseum , containing works by
the Halmstad Group , a body of six local artists from the 1920s who championed
Cubism and Surrealism in Sweden. The group, comprising brothers Eric and Axel
Olson, their cousin Waldemar Lorentzon and three others, worked together in an
artistic alliance for fifty years. The group's members had studied in Berlin and Paris and
were strongly influenced by Magritte and Dalí, producing work that caused
considerable controversy from the 1920s to the 1940s and sometimes working
collectively on projects - an almost unheard-of practice in Swedish art. A changing
exhibition of their work is on display in the museum.
Halmstad's beaches
Bus #10 runs to Tylösand hourly from Österskans in the town centre
Eight kilometres west of the town centre, Halmstad's most popular beach is at
Tylösand , which in July and August becomes packed with bronzing bodies, as do the
surrounding bars and restaurants in the evenings. There's a smuggler's cove to wander
around at Tjuvahålan , signposted directly of the beach, and plenty of excellent spots
for bathing, including Svärjarehålan around the headland to the east, where a
bathing beach has been adapted for the disabled. To reach less crowded areas, walk
45 minutes north from Tjuvahålan to Frösakull and Ringenäs , the latter of which is
popular for windsurfing.
Östra Stranden and Hagön
Bus #63 runs to both beaches hourly from Österskan in town; get of at the stop called “Hästskon” at the corner of Sommarvägen and
Ryttarevägen and walk west through the forest
The best beach to the east of town is at Östra Stranden , where there is also a large,
well-equipped campsite. The long beach - sandy and less crowded than at Tylösand - is
excellent for children as the waters are particularly shallow. A little further south is
