GUIDES AND LISTINGS
Magazines and guides The German/English-language
Berlin von Hinten (“Berlin from behind”; €12) is the city's
most useful gay guide. Siegessäule ( W siegessaeule.de), a
monthly gay magazine, has listings of events and an
encyclopedic directory of gay and lesbian contacts and
groups; it's available free from information centres and
most gay bars. They also produce an online city guide in
both German and English: W out-in-berlin.de.

cooperative that organizes workshops and events for gay
and lesbian groups.
Begine Potsdamer Str. 139, Schöneberg T 030 215 14
14, W begine.de; U-Bülowstrasse. Women's centre with a
mixed programme ranging from earnest lectures and films,
through excellent performances by women musicians and
dancers to televised women's soccer and disco evenings.

EWA Prenzlauer Allee 6, Prenzlauer Berg T 030 442 55
42, W ewa-frauenzentrum.de; U-Rosa-Luxemburg-
Platz. The first post-Wall women's centre in east Berlin,
EWA offers courses and counselling, as well as various
cultural events and computer and media facilities. It also
has an airy women-only café-gallery with a children's play
area. Good for events information and flyers. Mon-Thurs
10am-11pm, Fri-Sun varies according to programme.
Frauenzentrum Schokofabrik Mariannenstr. 6,
eastern Kreuzberg T 030 615 29 99, W schokofabrik
.de; U-Kottbusser Tor. One of Europe's largest women's
centres, with a café/gallery, sports facilities, including a
women-only Turkish bath (see p.234) and diverse events.
Mon-Thurs 10am-2pm, Fri noon-4pm.
Mann-O-Meter Bülowstr. 106, Schöneberg T 030 216
80 08, W mann-o-meter.de; U-Nollendorfplatz. One of
the city's main gay information centres and meeting
points. Tues-Fri 5-10pm, Sat & Sun 4-8pm.

GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
Das Verborgene Museum Schlüterstr. 70,

women artists for the research, documentation and
exhibition of women's art. Entry €2. Thurs & Fri 3-7pm,
Sat & Sun noon-4pm.
Schwules Museum Lützowstr. 73, Schöneberg T 030 69

Interesting gay museum with changing exhibitions on local
and international gay history, and library material to browse
through. Entry €6. Mon, Wed-Fri & Sun 2-6pm, Sat
2-7pm.
Spinnboden Anklamer Str. 38, Mitte T 030 448 58 48,
W spinnboden.de; U-Bernauer Strasse. A comprehensive
archive of every aspect of lesbian experience, with a
beautifully housed collection of books, videos, posters and
magazines. Wed & Fri 2-7pm.
ACCOMMODATION
Most accommodation in Berlin is gay-friendly, and there are some places, listed below, that are run for and by the gay
community. There are no hotels or pensions in Berlin specifically for lesbians , though there are women-only hotels
including the Artemisia (see p.181).

well-known gay club Connection . Most rooms are large and
en suite, bright, pleasant and ordinary - the “playrooms”,

One of the largest gay hotels in town, with a great
location in Berlin's gay village and its own vibrant café.
Bright simple rooms, with free wi-fi and a bowl of fruit
provided along with a pass for discounts at a number of
local businesses. €120
CAFÉS
You'll find the majority of gay and lesbian hangouts in Schöneberg, Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg. In addition to the
cafés there are several very active and convivial mixed-use venues, popular within the lesbian scene. Gay women might
also want to check out any possible happenings at the Begine women's centre (see above).
