CHRISTOPHER STREET DAY PARADE
Gay and lesbian Berlin
Berlin's gay and lesbian scenes are world-class - certainly on a par with those
of San Francisco or New York - and the city is a huge magnet for gay men
and women from all over Germany and Europe. This has been the case since
the 1920s, when Christopher Isherwood and W.H. Auden both came here,
drawn to a city where, in sharp contrast to oppressive London, the gay
community did not live in fear of harassment and legal persecution. The
easy-going, easy-living attitude stretches into the straight community, too,
and it's not uncommon to see transvestites at their glitziest dancing atop
tables at even the most conservative bashes. The best time to arrive and
plunge yourself into the hurly-burly is Gay Pride Week, centred on the
Christopher Street Day parade ( W csd-berlin.de) in late June.
