BARS AND CLUBS
The longest-standing and most concentrated area of gay bars is in Schöneberg between Wittenbergplatz and
Nollendorfplatz, though in the last decade or so the area south of Kleiststrasse, along Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer
Berg, has become an eastern gay centre. Many mainly straight clubs have gay nights - see Tip , Zitty or the dedicated gay
magazine
(see p.226) are all
mixed venues with a strong gay presence that have become legendary. Other nights not to miss are the GMF events
( W gmf-berlin.de), which pop up at different venues around town, and have over the years become a stalwart of the Berlin
scene - think stripped-to-the-waist revellers dancing to pounding house music. As in many other large cities, lesbians in
Berlin have a much lower profile than gay men. Perhaps because of this, there's no real distinction between bars and cafés
for lesbians and straight women, and many of Berlin's women-only bars have a strong lesbian following.
