spectacular views of the Beagle Channel,
passing grass-covered mounds that were
former campsites of the indigenous
Yámana and offering birdwatchers prime
opportunities for spotting Magellanic
woodpeckers, cormorants, gulls and
oystercatchers.
For the park's best views, trudge to the
top of 970m-high Cerro Guanaco Trail
(8km return; 8hr). Another popular
trail, Hito XXIV Trail (5km return; 3hr),
is a level path tracing the shores of Lago
Roca and ending at a small obelisk that
marks the border with Chile (it is illegal
to continue beyond here). Guanacos,
Patagonian grey foxes, Fuegian foxes,
Southern river otters and some ninety
bird species are among the park's fauna;
introduced Canadian beavers and
European rabbits also run amok,
wreaking environmental havoc.
The park is open daily 8am-8pm
(opening hours are slightly shorter during
the winter) and the entry fee is AR$85;

Wet and wild PARQUE NACIONAL TIERRA
DEL FUEGO , 12km west of Ushuaia,
stretches from the Beagle Channel in the
south to the border with Chile in the
west. Encompassing 630 square
kilometres of mountains, waterfalls,
glaciers, lakes, rivers, valleys,
sub-Antarctic forest and peat bog, most
of the park is closed to the public, with
less than 30km of accessible trails. With a
couple of days up your sleeve, you could
tackle all the short treks in the park. The
most popular is the Costera Trail (11km
return; 3hr 30min), which follows the
