In-Depth Information
Counter-culture is served daily, along with organic coffee, at quirky Haz Beanz (113
Baldwin Ave., 808/268-0149, 6am-2pm Mon.-Fri., 6am-1pm Sat., 6am-noon Sun.), toward
the top of Pa'ia. The shop is best known for its “orgasm” drink, a chocolate and peanut
butter concoction. (Note the oft-photographed sign in the window: “Have you had an or-
gasm today? Come on in...we can help!”).
Shave Ice
Nothing caps off a day at the beach like a visit to Tobi's Shave Ice (137 Hana Hwy., 808/
579-9745, 11am-6pm daily). Get the Kauai cream drizzled on top of the syrupy mound (it
goes best with blue vanilla) and add azuki beans and ice cream to the bottom.
HA'IKU
Local Style
French stalwarts like croque monsieur sit on the same menu as gravy-covered loco moco
at Hana Hou Café (810 Ha'iku Rd., 808/575-2661, www.hanahoucafe.com , 9am-9pm
Wed.-Mon., 4:30pm-9pm Tues., $13-23), offering a garden setting in the Ha'iku Cannery.
Choose from affordable plate lunch favorites such as chicken katsu and hamburger steak.
It's also one of the few places on the island where you can order a lu'au-style dinner
without actually being at a lu'au. Go all in with Hawaiian classics such as lau lau, kalua
pig, lomi salmon, and squid lu'au. Top it all off with coconut haupia pudding.
Mexican
A pop-up tent in the parking lot of the Ha'iku Cannery, Island Taco (810 Ha'iku Rd.,
10am-4pm Mon.-Fri., $5) serves chicken, pork, and fish tacos at a wallet-friendly price.
Dig into a fresh fish taco at one of picnic tables where the cheery staff are happy to “talk
story.”
American
M Colleen's (810 Ha'iku Rd., 808/575-9211, www.colleensinhaiku.com , 6am-10pm daily,
$7-14, dinner $18-30) has become synonymous with Ha'iku dining. Expect heaping plates
of omelets, eggs Benedict, and breakfast burritos. Pizzas, fish tacos, and Maui Cattle Com-
pany cheeseburgers dominate the lunch menu. Pair your portobello mushroom burger with
locally brewed beer on tap. For dinner, enjoy island favorites like pan-seared ahi or wild
mushroom ravioli. Stop in after biking down Haleakala with Haleakala Bike Co., which is
right next door.
