In-Depth Information
Natural Foods
Natural foods enclave M Mana Foods (49 Baldwin Ave., 808/579-8078,
www.manafoodsmaui.com , 8am-8:30pm daily) is the epicenter of the island's health-con-
scious community, with a selection of organic and natural offerings so comprehensive and
affordable that shoppers come from as far away as Napili to stock up. For quick meals
there's a hot bar as well as a deli section where you can build your own health-conscious
picnic lunch for the Road to Hana. The aisles also provide some great people-watching.
Mediterranean
Culinary hideaway M Café des Amis (42 Baldwin Ave., 808/579-6323,
www.cdamaui.com , 8:30am-8:30pm daily, $9-18) specializes in crepes and curries. Enjoy
Italian coffee and crepes stuffed with vegetables, chicken, and cheese (or all of the above)
in the outdoor courtyard. There's also a wide range of sweet crepes and a full menu of cur-
ries, best when paired mango chutney.
Vietnamese
For all the health-conscious restaurants in town, the only one that is entirely vegan is tiny
Fresh Mint (115 Baldwin Ave., 808/579-9144, 11am-9pm Wed.-Sun., $9-14), toward the
top of Pa'ia. This mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall runs thin on decor and heavy on portions.
Soy fish in a clay pot and pho are popular items. A bonus: You can bring in your own
bottle of wine.
Coffee Shops
If you've dreamed of being a professional surfer like Laird Hamilton, start your day
off at M Anthony's Coffee Company (90 Hana Hwy., 808/579-8340,
www.anthonyscoffee.com , 5:30am-6pm daily). This legendary Pa'ia mainstay is known as
the refueling center for some of the North Shore's biggest names. You just might catch
sight of a passing celebrity as you slurp up the last of your eggs Benedict or acai smooth-
ie. A full espresso bar adds a jolt into your morning. Twenty different varieties of freshly
roasted beans (including those from Kona, Moloka'i, and Ka'anapali) are on sale. As the
sign says, it offers the “last Wi-Fi before Hana,” in case you need to fire off a final TPS
report before disappearing into the vine-dripping hinterlands beyond.
If you would rather enjoy a casual coffee in a garden setting, Pa'ia Bay Coffee (43
Hana Hwy., 808/579-3111, www.paiabaycoffee.com , 6:30am-6pm Mon.-Sat., 7am-6pm
Sun.) is steps away from the bay on the ocean side of the highway. Enjoy a small selection
of sandwiches, croissants, salads, and bagels in the shaded grove along with free Wi-Fi.
