HANA TO KIPAHULU
Art Galleries
For a gallery that focuses on the unique art of handcrafted paper, stop into Karen David-
son Fine Art (mile marker 46.3, 808/248-4877, www.karendavidson.net ) tucked along the
road between Hana and Kipahulu on the ocean side of the highway. Many of the works
here are either oil paintings on handmade paper or an array of paper collages. There's a
Hawaiian/Polynesian theme coursing through much of the artwork unique and relevant to
Hana. The studio itself is a work of art in that it opens out to the Hana coastline. If you are
more interested in fine art than tumbling waterfalls, call ahead to arrange a visit.
Ark Ceramics studio and gallery (808/344-3885, www.arkceramics.net , 11am-4pm) is
nestled eight miles past Hana in a section known locally as Koali. You'll need to call ahead
and arrange an appointment, but if you're a tea-lover, you'll be amazed at artist Arrabella
Ark's pottery prowess in creating teapots in the traditional raku form.
