LIVE MUSIC
Pa'ia
The de facto late-night watering hole for all of the North Shore continues to be Charley's
(142 Hana Hwy., 808/579-8085, www.charleysmaui.com , open until 2am), where there's
live music on most nights of the week. Charley's is the only place in Pa'ia where you can
dance. There can also occasionally be live music in the courtyard of Café des Amis (42
Baldwin Ave., 808/579-6323, www.cdamaui.com , open until 8:30pm), which is an intim-
ate venue for taking in some tunes.
Hana
The most happening show in town is at the Travaasa Hana hotel (5031 Hana Hwy., 808/
359-2401, www.travaasa.com/hana ) every Sunday, Monday, and Thursday evening in the
dining room. Thursday is usually the most eventful, when local people will put on their
finest wear and head out on the town for a drink and entertainment. You never know the
local talent that might roll through the dining hall. Many famous Hawaiian artists have
Hana roots either in that they were raised here or have family who live here. It isn't un-
common for the regularly scheduled performer to be joined by a visiting musical artist who
just happened to be in town for the week. It also isn't uncommon to have a local person
jump out of a chair mid-meal and dance hula to a favorite song before sitting back down
to finish the meal. More so than at any other establishment on the island, the evening en-
tertainment is rich with community and a feeling of aloha, and an evening experiencing
the live entertainment at the Travaasa can be more of a cultural experience than any resort
lu'au or show.
Live music can also be found at the Hana Ranch Restaurant (5031 Hana Hwy., 808/
270-5280, 7:30pm-9:30pm Tues.) one night a week. A scheduled band will usually provide
the entertainment for the first hour, followed by a second hour of open-mic night. When it
comes to open-mic night in Hana, you'd be surprised how much talent a small community
can foster when you eliminate the so-called conveniences of the modern world. Ukulele,
hula, music, and song are ways of life when living in Hana, and the artistic talent which
courses through this community is inspiring.
