daily), and Maui Tropix (261 Dairy Rd., 808/871-8726, 9am-8pm Mon.-Sat., 9am-6pm
Sun.), which sells the ubiquitous Maui Built wear.
Don't miss a local tradition and one of the most unusual shopping experiences on
the island: the Maui Swap Meet (310 W. Ka'ahumanu Ave., 808/244-3100,
www.mauiexposition.com , 7am-1pm Sat.) on the grounds of the UH Maui College.
WAILUKU
Compared to shopping hot spots such as Lahaina, Pa'ia, or Makawao, Wailuku has woe-
fully little to offer in way of the retail sector. What shopping does occur, however, takes
place on Market Street, and between the numerous pawn shops and mom-and-pop stores,
it's worth at least poking around when you're in town.
Near the corner of Market Street and Main Street you'll find If The Shoe Fits (21
N. Market St., 808/249-9710, www.hotbiskitshoes.com , 10am-5pm Mon.-Fri., 10am-2pm
Sat.), which is Maui's only shoe-repair shop and also specializes in specialty footwear. To
say that these people love shoes would be an understatement; they even run the Maui Shoe
Academy focused on shoe repair and design.
Also near the corner of Market and Main is Maui Thing (7 N. Market St., 808/
249-0215, www.mauithing.com , 10am-5pm Mon.-Fri., 10am-4pm Sat.), a clothing store
which focuses on Maui-themed clothing and accessories. This is a great store if you're
looking for a unique Maui clothing gift you aren't going to find anywhere else on the is-
land.
Across the street is a longtime Wailuku institution, Requests (10 N. Market St., 808/
244-9315, www.requestshawaii.com , 10am-6pm Mon.-Sat.) music store, which ranks as
the last holdout of true island record shops. For music lovers who love walking into a re-
cord shop to feel the vinyl, admire the album covers, and talk with people who really love
music, this shop has been kept alive through the digital music revolution by a loyal cus-
tomer fan base. Most of the merchandise caters to the reggae and roots lifestyle, but they
also have a basement which is chock-full of music that goes back decades.
At the far end of Market Street are two local water sports stores. TriPaddle Maui (54
N. Market St., 808/243-7235, www.tripaddlemaui.com , 10am-5pm Mon.-Fri., 10am-3pm
Sat.) specializes in everything to do with outrigger paddle sports. Maui Sporting Goods
(92 N. Market St., 808/244-0011, 9am-6pm Mon.-Fri., 9am-5pm Sat.) is the de facto fish-
ing headquarters for most of Maui's anglers.
