If you want take this adventurous back road, which direction should you to ap-
proach it from? If you're departing from West Maui and moving in a clockwise dir-
ection around the mountain, you have the benefit of being on the inside lane and
away from the steep cliff faces. Since you are pressed against the mountainside in-
stead of against the ocean, you run the risk of falling rocks coming down after a
heavy rain. If you approach from the Wailuku direction and move in a counterclock-
wise direction around the mountain, be sure the person in the passenger seat isn't
afraid of heights.
Buckle up, hold on, and get ready for a ride to remember.
Shopping
KAHULUI
Because of its malls Kahului has the largest amount of shopping on the island. Combine
this with the smaller shopping plazas, big-box stores, and individual shops around town,
and you can find everything you might need.
The two-story Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center
( www.queenkaahumanucenter.com , 9:30am-9pm Mon.-Sat., 10am-5pm Sun.) along
Ka'ahumanu Avenue is Kahului's largest mall, with the widest selection of stores, many of
which are large corporate chains.
The open-air Maui Mall ( www.mauimall.com , 10am-6pm daily, until 8pm Fri. and
4pm Sun.) is more pedestrian, yet it has a pleasant ambience as its buildings are set around
a central T-shaped courtyard. At the intersection of Hana Highway and Ka'ahumanu Aven-
ue, Maui Mall has Longs Drugs for everything from aspirin to rubber slippers, a megaplex
theater, a handful of clothing and specialty shops, and a couple of places for quick food.
Kahului also has the greatest concentration of water sports shops on the island, many of
them at or near the corner of Hana Highway and Dairy Road. Stop here for surf clothing,
accessories, boardshorts, or equipment sales. Favorites include Hawaiian Island Surf and
