One of the only places for dining in Ka'anapali that isn't associated with a resort is CJ's
Deli (2580 Keka'a Dr., 808/667-0968, www.cjsmaui.com , 7am-8pm daily, $7-13) in the
Fairway Shops. There is a $7 early bird platter at CJ's that includes coffee, and the mod-
erate prices continue throughout the day. CJ's specializes in delicious home-style comfort
food, though the counter service can often be a little snippy. Nevertheless, it's a good op-
tion if you don't want to pay resort prices. It's BYOB.
Umalu (Hyatt Regency, 808/280-6986, www.maui.hyatt.com , 10am-10pm daily,
$13-19) has the best ahi poke nachos on the West Side of the island. Stop reading this sen-
tence right now and go get them. Sure, they're $18, but they're big enough for two people
to split. In addition to the nachos there are sandwiches and flatbreads.
On the far other end of the main Ka'anapali Beach strip is the Tiki Terrace Restaurant
(2525 Ka'anapali Pkwy., 808/667-0124, 6:30am-11am and 6pm-9pm dinner Mon.-Sat.,
9am-1pm Sun.) which has the best all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch ($37) on the West Side
of the island, with bottomless champagne and a free hula show.
In front of the Honua Kai resort, Duke's (130 Kai Malina Pkwy., 808/662-2900,
www.dukesmaui.com , 7:30am-9:30pm daily, $10-25) is in the same family of moderately
priced restaurants as Kimo's, Leilani's, and Hula Grill. Affordable breakfasts include ba-
nana, macadamia nut pancakes, while lunches tend toward sandwiches, burgers, and fish
tacos. Dinner entrées are a touch more expensive. Duke's sources ingredients from over
20 different local farms. Afternoon trade winds can make the outdoor dining frustrating,
so go for breakfast before 10am, or for dinner after sundown.
Hawaiian Regional
Even though every resort in Ka'anapali has some sort of Hawaiian Regional option, none
can hold a candle to world-famous M Roy's (2290 Ka'anapali Pkwy., 808/669-6999,
www.roysrestaurant.com , 11am-9:30pm daily, $15-45). The location inside the golf club-
house would be nicer if it had an ocean view, but for what the restaurant lacks in decor,
it makes up for in flavor. Chef Roy Yamaguchi was one of the founders of the Hawaii-
an Regional movement, and his mastery is evident in the misoyaki butterfish and honey
mustard-braised short ribs. Even though there are over 30 Roy's locations around the coun-
try, every restaurant has a menu and a style unique to the venue. Dinner entrées are pricey;
ordering sandwiches, salads, and appetizers off the lunch menu is more affordable. The
chocolate soufflé will change your life; order it half-way through your meal since it takes
20 minutes to prepare.
