In-Depth Information
M Hula Grill (2435 Ka'anapali Pkwy., 808/667-6636, www.hulagrillkaanapali.com ,
11am-11pm, $13) in Whalers Village is my favorite for oceanfront dining. The barefoot
bar has a better atmosphere than the dining room, and it's the only place on the island
where you walk through sand to get to your table. There's live music in the afternoons.
The Kapulu Joe pork sandwich and the wood-fired goat cheese and roasted pumpkin pizza
are two affordable options along an otherwise expensive shoreline.
Across the Whalers Village walkway, Leilani's On The Beach (2435 Ka'anapali Pk-
wy., 808/661-4495, www.leilanis.com , 11am-11pm daily, $15) serves the best fish tacos
on the island. The tacos are enormous, served Cajun style, and accompanied by a special
sauce that brings it all together. Take advantage of discounts Tuesday 3pm-5pm. Whether
you dine on the casual patio or the upstairs in the dining room, save room for a world-fam-
ous Hula Pie with macadamia nut ice cream and chocolate cookie crust; it's big enough to
share.
At the far southern end of the Ka'anapali strip, Japengo (200 Nohea Kai Dr., 808/
667-4796, 5pm-10pm daily, $20) has enormous and affordable sushi rolls which rival even
Sansei. You'll be amazed that by ordering a big roll and blackened ahi hand rolls, you can
dine at a fancy resort and completely stuff two people on fresh sushi. At sushi school (2nd
and 4th Sat. each month, 3pm-4:30pm, $35/person), you can learn to make hand rolls from
one of the restaurant's master chefs.
Natural Foods
The best gourmet natural foods market on the West Side, 'Aina Gourmet Market (130
Kai Malina Pkwy., 808/662-2832, www.ainagourmet.com , 7am-9pm daily) is tucked away
in the lobby of Honua Kai Beach Resort. 'Aina is in the same restaurant group as Pacifico,
I'o, and O'o Farms, and this is a great place for grabbing a cup of 100 percent Maui coffee,
organically raised produce, or a healthy panini made from locally sourced ingredients.
There are a few tables, or enjoy your meal on the beach.
Coffee Shops
The only local coffee shop in Ka'anapali is Island Press Coffee (2580 Keka'a Dr., 808/
667-2003, 6am-7pm Mon.-Sat., 7am-4pm Sun.) in the Fairway Shops. The location isn't
exactly prime for anyone staying in an oceanfront resort, but if you're up early from jet lag
and want to go for an early morning stroll, it's nice that the doors open at 6am most days.
