the manufacturers. The same applies also to the
updates of existing devices with new capabilities.
Fortunately, patches come out tactically anymore.
Despite its amateur origins and its open source
nature, its penetration and acceptance, especially
from the developers' world, has recently gained
the notice and support of “large” wireless and
mobile players. Today, it is updated almost daily
with new devices and correction of wrong entries.
detect and understand the capabilities (hardware
and software) of an attached wireless client device,
based on WURFL. In specific, our proposal is a
combination of the WURFL repository of device
attributes with a JAVA servlet CGI technology
for dynamic adaptation of the content that the
server presents to the clients, according to the
associated client device's capabilities. For dem-
onstration purposes we presented the WURFL-
based solution we have developed for a hospital
environment. Our informational web-like service
provides to the authorized medical personnel of
the hospital intranet updated information related
to their patients. The information is retrieved from
an associated repository of patients' clinical data
and is presented to the wireless devices that the
medical personnel carry with in the premises of
the hospital properly adapted to the respective
terminal profiles. What it includes is, at first, clas-
sification of the client capabilities that are detected
via WURFL, to one of the capabilities' classes we
have created for the various wireless devices and
then, adaptation of the requested medical content
CONCLUSION
This chapter focused on the issue of adapta-
tion of medical services and content, including
multimedia, to the terminal capabilities of the
requesting devices so with only one service design
all the possible client devices can be served. Our
contribution at first introduced to the terminal
capabilities announcement issue and the associ-
ated standardized technologies discussing the
controversies with their adoption. Then it proposed
a different approach to the server-side attempt to
