combust it cleanly without preheating or using other methods to modify the fuel
properties and/or atomization characteristics.
7 Glycerol Combustion
FB injector was used to combust straight glycerol having extremely high kinematic
viscosity as shown in Table 1 . Glycerol also has a high ignition temperature. Thus,
a glycerol

is not available to preheat the incoming fuel stream (Metzger 2007 ). One potentially
dangerous aspect of glycerol combustion is the production of acrolein. Acrolein is
an extremely toxic compound at low levels (approximately 2 ppm) and is produced
during decomposition of glycerol (Metzger 2007 ). Thus, the combustion system
must oxidize decomposed species and ensure complete combustion. Preliminary
experiments revealed a rather weak glycerol
