In-Depth Information
» Cane Garden Bay The break at the bay's northern point is mythic. Only one prob-
lem: you need a 6ft to 7ft swell, which happens less than a dozen times a season. But
when it does come, it's an excellent long ride. Hardcore surfers get weak at the knees
thinking about it.
» Josiah's Bay Josiah's, on the East End, wins the best all-round award for Tortola
surfing. It's a beach break, with a constantly changing wave that's rideable in an array
of conditions (except when it's bigger than 5 feet; then it becomes tough to paddle out
and deal with rip tides). Families come to Josiah's to watch the scene on weekends,
and many even join the action.
Activities
Cane Garden Bay Pleasure Boats & Water Sports BOAT
TRIPS
( 284-495-9660) It rents 18- to 28-foot outboards with bimini tops and VHF radios.
Rates start at about $150 a day. You can rent snorkel gear and bodyboards ($35 to $40 per
day), too.
Shadow's Ranch HORSEBACK RIDING
( 284-494-2262; Ridge Rd) Shadow, a friendly West Indian man you might well meet
at the Elm Beach Bar at Cane Garden Bay, offers horseback riding through Sage Mountain
National Park or down to the beach at Todman's Estate. He works with several of the re-
sorts; call for customized trips and rates.
Sleeping
Most of the Cane Garden Bay beach options are fun but not fancy. You'll have to move
away from the party zone to find more elegant digs. And while you could feasibly stay at
Cane Garden Bay itself without a car, you'll need wheels to stay at any of the other lodgings
not sitting right on the bay.
