Mt Healthy National Park PARK
( sunrise-sunset) This small preserve of less than an acre stands above Brewers Bay
and features Tortola's only intact remains of a stone windmill, once part of an 18th-century
sugar plantation. You'll be on your own to poke around the place.
Beaches
Cane Garden Bay ACTIVITIES BEACH
Cane Garden Bay is probably the beach on the postcard that drew you to the BVI in the
first place. It's Tortola's most famous and popular beach. The gently sloping crescent of
sand hosts plenty of beachside bars and water-sports vendors. It's a popular yacht anchor-
age, and becomes a full-on madhouse when cruise ships arrive in Road Town and shuttle
passengers over for the day. The party continues most nights and weekends, too, with a
congenial mix of West Indians, sailors and travelers grooving to all manner of live music.
If you're looking for the BVI equivalent of spring break, this is it.
Brewers Bay ACTIVITIES BEACH
Travelers like Brewers Bay, a palm-fringed bay on the north shore, east of Cane Garden
Bay. There are two beach bars, a campground, guesthouse and excellent snorkeling on the
coral heads that pepper the bay. The beach is always tranquil because getting here involves
an expensive cab ride as well as a brake-smoking ride down steep switchbacks.
WHERE THE WAVES ARE: SURFING
HIGHLIGHTS
Surf season in Tortola is between November and March. Good waves can break as
late as May, though after March they're much less frequent. Hurricanes also produce
quality surf in September and October.
ยป Apple Bay (aka Cappoons Bay) This is the water in front of Bomba's Surf Shack
on the West End. When the wind blows right, you can sit in the lineup and listen to
reggae music waft over from the bar. Then you can ride up to the shore and grab a
cold beer. It's an easy break and attracts loads of surfers.
