Tamarind Reef's 38 motel-like rooms are nothing fancy, but the location overlooking Green
Cay impresses. All units come with free wi-fi, a kitchenette and a private patio or balcony
with a sea view. There are two beaches, protected by offshore reefs, and a large pool. The
popular Galleon restaurant is at the marina next door. The hotel is about 3 miles east of
Christiansted, on the northeast shore.
Eating
Cheeseburgers in Paradise BURGERS $$
( 340-773-1119;Rte82;mains$8-14; lunch&dinner; ) You may indeed think
it's paradise at this ever-popular stop for snowbirds and families. The setting is a roadside
field with a small bar and kitchen building surrounded by a collection of open-air tables,
some shaded with large umbrellas. The cuisine is light and informal Tex-Mex. The ambi-
ence says 'picnic.' Open wide for the nachos and the 'world famous cheeseburger,' or just
come for a lick of soft-serve ice cream. This popular restaurant also puts on live music sev-
eral nights a week, including reggae on Saturday and steel pan on Sunday, starting at about
6pm.
South Shore Café CAFE $$
( 340-773-9311;Rte62&Rte624;mains$20-30; dinnerWed-Sun) This gourmet
bistro with an open-air setting sits by its lonesome near Great Pond. Most of Diane Sch-
euber's cuisine is Italian in style, such as sweet-potato ravioli with onions or tomato-based
Sicilian clam chowder. Daily specials include a vegetarian option, plus Scheuber makes her
own bread and ice cream. The rustic structure is an old dairy building. Reservations recom-
mended.
Pickled Greek GREEK $$
( 340-713-1868; www.thepickledgreek.com ;Rte82;mains$19-24; dinnerMon-
Sat) The trim blue-and-white building looks like it came straight from Santorini. Owner
Papi does not dispel that notion with his grandmother's old country recipes for stuffed
grape leaves, moussaka and gyros. He makes a vegan stew with squash, potatoes and corn.
Don't forget to try the chickpea fries!
