In-Depth Information
Eating
Christiansted knows how to fill a stomach. On one hand, you'll find imaginative, upscale
dining at chic little bistros. On the other, you'll find local holes-in-the-wall that specialize
in budget-priced West Indian fare (King St offers a good row of these between King Cross
and Smith Sts). Casual bar- restaurants that fall somewhere in the middle line the water-
front. Many eateries close on Sunday and/or Monday.
Harvey's WEST INDIAN $$
( 340-773-3433;11BCompanySt;mains$11-22; 11am-4pmMon-Sat) At breezy,
10-table Harvey's, a classic tropical cafe, you half expect Humphrey Bogart from Casab-
lanca to wander in and order a drink at the bar. Conch in butter sauce, delicate grouper,
sweet-potato-based Cruzan stuffing, rice and peas and many more West Indian dishes arrive
heaped on plates. Look for the big mural outside of NBA star Tim Duncan; he used to wait
table here before achieving his hoop dreams.
Sale e Miele ITALIAN $$
( 340-719-0510; 57C Company St; mains $14-23; lunch Tue-Sat, dinner Thu-
Sat) This amiable trattoria serves authentic Tuscan cuisine at tables scattered in a shady
courtyard. Calamari, lasagna, and ricotta-and-spinach quiche are some of the dishes written
on the blackboard menu. The Italian owner and her husband source much of their produce
from the local farmers market and use those ingredients as a starting point for the menu
each week. There's a nice wine list to go with the flavors.
Savant INTERNATIONAL $$
( 340-713-8666;4CHospitalSt;mains$17-28; dinnerMon-Sat; ) Cozy, low-
lit Savant serves upscale fusion cookery in a colonial townhouse. You know you're in for
something wild when you see the leopard-print curtains. The ever-changing menu com-
bines spicy Caribbean, Mexican and Thai recipes; sweat over them in the air-conditioning
indoors or outside in the courtyard. Reservations recommended, though you can walk in
and try for one the handful of stools at the bar.
