Eating
Cruz Bay offers the traveler an unexpected range of distinctive eateries. They are all within
an easy walk of each other, which makes window-shopping for a place to eat one of the
joys of dining out on St John. Because of the easy and frequent ferry service between St
Thomas and St John, a lot of people from St Thomas come to Cruz Bay for a night of res-
taurant- and bar-hopping.
The road that fronts the BVI ferry dock hosts several stalls that sell gingery bush tea in
the morning and fruit smoothies in the afternoon.
Jake's BREAKFAST, BURGERS $$
( 340-777-7115;Lumberyard; mains $10-17; 7am-4am) Jake's will fill your belly
no matter what time you roll out of bed. All-day breakfast is its forte, including well-stuffed
omelets, crispy home fries (with Sriracha hot sauce as a dipping condiment) and strong
coffee. Ceiling fans whir, newspapers rustle and reggae drifts from the speakers...then the
couple next to you orders a triple shot of Jack Daniel's to accompany their pancakes! Jake's
is that kind of place. The open-air, 24-seat cafe is up the hill across from the BVI ferry
dock, on the second floor, with views of the busy harbor scene.
Shela's Pot WEST INDIAN $$
(cnr Prince St & Strand St; mains $10-15; lunch Tue-Sat) This is home cookin'
where the locals go. Shela opens around noon when the fisherfolk return with the daily
catch. Then she takes the shrimp, conch, fish and chicken, stirs them up in her big pots, and
scoops them into takeaway boxes along with side dishes like mashed sweet potato, fried
plantains and mac and cheese. Dig in at the shaded picnic tables. Shela is in a small shack
across from the St Thomas ferry landing; look for the spot where all the taxi drivers are
hanging out. Cash only.
