Westin Resort HOTEL $$$
( 340-693-8000, 800-808-5020; www.westinresortstjohn.com ; r from $650;
) The 321-room Westin is St John's biggest property by far, and it has all the hall-
marks of a contemporary five-star resort: a quarter-acre pool, a palm-shaded beach on
Great Cruz Bay, a fitness center, spa, lit tennis courts and four restaurants. You even get a
'boat butler' to help arrange your water sports. Guests can choose between the cedar-roof
villas at seaside or the lower-priced condo units on the hill across the road. Rooms feature
all the first-class amenities, private decks and contemporary furnishings, but no cooking
facilities. The resort caters for kids as well, with a program of supervised art and recreation
activities. The Westin is 1.5 miles south of Cruz Bay via Rte 104 (Southside Rd), so you'll
need wheels to get to town.
Coconut Coast Villas APARTMENTS $$$
( 340-693-9100, 800-858-7989; www.coconutcoast.com ; apt from $289; )
The nine units in this compound, including studios and townhouses, stand right on the
cobblestone beach at Turner Bay. Each villa comes with local art, a kitchen, private deck
and wi-fi. There's a communal swimming pool, hot tub and barbecue grill. Cruz Bay is a
10-minute walk over the hill. Four-night minimum stay required.
Gallows Point Resort HOTEL $$$
( 340-776-6434, 800-323-7229; www.gallowspointresort.com ; r $495-575;
) It stands out for being small (only 15 suites), independently owned and a three-minute
walk from the shops, restaurants and nightlife in town. The suites are set amid lushly land-
scaped grounds, and each has a full kitchen, a private deck, free wi-fi and French doors
that open onto water views. The beach isn't that great, but the setting overall is pretty dang
awesome.
Rental Accommodations
St John has loads of privately owned condos and villas. These rentals can be a reasonable
option, especially if you're accommodating more than two people. One-, two- and three-
bedroom properties are all common. Most require a week-long stay in high season. A typic-
al one-bedroom villa costs $1600 to $2700 per week. To be near Cruz Bay, look for listings
in the Chocolate Hole or Great Cruz Bay areas. In addition to VRBO ( www.vrbo.com ) ,
