ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT
SP-6 Sanyinjiao, SP-IO Xuchai, BL-17 Geshu, LI-4 Hegu, ST-40 Fenglong, CV-17 Tanzhong, LR-3 Taichong and LR-14 Qimen. Reducing method is used on these points.
Explanations
• Stagnation of Blood causing breast pain is usually due to persistent Liver-Qi stagnation, accumulation of Damp-Phlegm or hyperactivity of toxic Fire, which lead to severe blockage of the collateral and channels in the breast. The root treatment is to promote the Blood circulation and eliminate the Blood stasis.
• SP-6, the crossing point of the three Yin channels of the foot, SP-10, the point called Sea of Blood, and BL-17, the Gathering point for the Blood, promote the Blood circulation, eliminate Blood stasis and relieve the breast pain.
• LI-4 and LR-3, the Source points, promote the Qi circulation so as to promote Blood circulation. They can also sedate the breast pain.
• CV-17, the Gathering point for Qi in the body generally, relaxes the chest and smoothes the Qi circulation in the chest and breast so as to help the above points promote the Blood circulation.
• ST-40, the Connecting point, harmonises the collateral and relieves the blockage in the breast.
• LR-14, the Front Collecting point of the Liver, smoothes the Liver, promotes the Liver-Qi circulation, relaxes the chest and relieves the pain.
Modifications
1. If there is severe breast pain, add PC-4 and KI-9, the Accumulation points of the Pericardium channel and the Yin Linking Vessel respectively, to sedate the breast pain.
2. If there are palpable and immobile nodules, add LR-5, the Connecting point, to promote the Blood circulation and resolve the nodules.
3. If there is depression, add LR-8, the Sea point, and LR-12 to regulate the Liver-Qi and relieve the depression.
4. If there is a feeling of oppression over the chest, add CV-16, the Connecting point of the Directing Vessel, to unblock the chest and relieve the feeling of oppression.
5. If there is restlessness, palpitation and insomnia due to extreme pain, add HT-7 and HT-3 to tranquillise the Mind and calm the Heart.
6. If there is night sweating and hot flushes due to deficiency of the Liver-Yin, add HT-6, the Accumulation point, and KI-7, the Metal point, to nourish the Liver-Yin and clear Deficient-Heat.
7. If there is lower abdominal pain, add SP-8, the Accumulation point, and ST-28 to promote the Qi and Blood circulation in the abdomen and relieve the pain.
8. If there is amenorrhoea or dysmenorrhoea, add CV-3 and ST-29 to promote the Qi and Blood circulation in the Lower Burner, eliminate Blood stasis and regulate the menstruation.
9. If there is irregular menstruation, add KI-3 and CV-6 to tonify the Kidney and regulate the menstruation.
10. If there is scar formation with poor wound healing after a breast operation, add some surrounding points around the wound to promote healing.
11. If there is generalised tiredness, add ST-36 and CV-4 to tonify the Qi and relieve the tiredness.
12. If there is constipation, add ST-25, the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine, to promote defecation and relieve the constipation.
HYPERACTIVITY OF TOXIC FIRE
Symptoms and signs
Redness, swelling, heat and a burning pain in the breast, especially around the nipple, aggravation of the pain on touching the breast, accompanied by fever, a slight aversion to cold, thirst, constipation, restlessness, a red tongue with a yellow and dry coating and a rapid and slippery pulse.
Principle of treatment
Clear Heat and remove Toxin, reduce swelling and sedate the pain.

Explanations
• Jin Yin Hua and Pu Gong Ying clear Heat and eliminate Toxin so as to stop the pain.
• Ye Ju Hua, Zi Hua Di Ding and Zi Bei Tian Kui eliminate Toxin, cool the Blood and reduce swelling.
Modifications
I. If there is obvious redness and swelling of the breast due to severe Toxin, add Huang Lian
Rhizoma Coptidis IOg and Da Qing Ye Folium Isatidis 10 g to clear Heat, remove the Toxin and reduce the swelling.
2. If there is a fever, add Shi Gao Gypsum Fibrosum 20 g and Sheng Ma Rhizoma Cimicifugae 5 g to clear Heat and reduce the fever.
3. If there is a headache, add Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10 g to sedate the headache.
4. If there is pus or ulceration in the breast, add Zhe Bei Mu Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii 10 g and Zao Jiao Ci Spina Gledisiae 10 g to clear Heat, eliminate the pus and reduce the ulceration.
5. If there is a burning feeling in the breast, add Xia Ku Cao Spica Prunella 10 g and Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae 12 g to clear Heat in the breast and remove Toxin.
6. If there are nodules in the breast, add Yu Jin Radix Curcumae 10 g to eliminate Damp-Phlegm in the breast and soften the nodules.
7. If there is an occasional stabbing pain in the breast, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10 g to promote Blood circulation and relieve the pain.
8. If there is a yellow and greasy tongue coating and a slippery and rapid pulse due to the accumulation of Toxic Damp-Heat, add Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 5 g and Cang Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis 10 g to clear the Heat and resolve the Damp.
9. If there is nausea or vomiting, add Zhu Ru Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam 10 g and Xuan Fu Hua Flos Inulae 10 g to cause the Stomach-Qi to descend and relieve the vomiting.
10. If there is restlessness and insomnia, add Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 10 g and Zhu Ye Herba Lophatheri 10 g to clear Heat and calm the Mind.
11. If there is severe thirst, add Zhi Mu Rhizoma Anemarrhenae 10 g and Tian Hua Fen Radix Trichosanthis 10 g to clear the Heat, promote secretion of Body Fluids and relieve the thirst.
12. If there is constipation, add Da Huang Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 10 g and Mang Xiao Natrii Sulfas 10 g to clear Heat, reduce Fire and promote defecation.

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

Explanations
• Invasion of Toxic Heat, generation of Toxin due to prolonged persistence of Qi stagnation, and accumulation of Damp-Phlegm may all cause hyperactivity of Toxic Fire, leading to damage and burning of the collateral and muscle in the breast, causing breast pain.
• LI-2, the Spring point, LI-4, the Source point, and LI-11, the Sea point, are used to clear Heat, remove Toxin and promote defecation in order to eliminate Toxic Fire.
• ST-44, the Spring point, cools Heat, reduces fever and removes Toxin.
• ST-40, the Connecting point, harmonises the collateral and reduces swelling.
• SP-6 and BL-17 cool the Blood and remove Toxin.
• GV-10 clears Heat, removes Toxin and reduces the swelling.
Modifications
1. If there is a high fever, add GV-14, the meeting point of all the Yang channels, to clear Heat and reduce the fever.
2. If there is pus or ulceration in the breast, add ST-16 and ST-18 to clear Heat, eliminate the pus and reduce the ulceration.
3. If there is restlessness and insomnia, add HT-3 and HT-7 to clear Heat in the Heart and tranquillise the Mind.
4. If there is distension and pain in the breast and chest, add PC-6, the Connecting point, and CV-17, the Gathering point for the Qi, to promote the Qi circulation in the chest and sedate the pain.
5. If there is a stabbing pain in the breast or bleeding from the breast, add SP-10 and BL-17 to clear Heat in the Blood and remove Toxin.
6. If there is restlessness due to pain, add Extra Sishencong and HT-3 to calm the Heart and tranquillise the Mind.
7. If there is insomnia, add HT-8 to clear Heat in the Heart and improve the sleep.
8. If the appetite is poor, add SP-3, the Source point, to activate the Spleen and improve the appetite.

11. If there is a yellow and greasy tongue coating, add CV-12, the Gathering point for the Fu organs, and SP-2, the Spring point, to clear Heat and eliminate Damp.
12. If there is diarrhoea, add SP-9, the Sea point of the Spleen channel, to eliminate Damp-Phlegm, activate the Spleen and relieve the diarrhoea.
XU TYPE OF BREAST PAIN DEFICIENCY OF QI AND BLOOD
Symptoms and signs
Gradual onset of a slight breast pain that moves up and down with breast softness and a bearing-down sensation, and aggravation of the pain after menstruation, accompanied by scanty menstruation with a light red colour of the blood, a pale complexion, hair loss, a poor appetite, generalised tiredness, palpitations, shortness of breath, an aversion to cold, coldness in the limbs, nycturia, lower back pain, a pale and swollen tongue with tooth marks and a deep, weak and thready pulse.

Modifications
1. If there is obvious hair loss and scanty menstruation due to Blood deficiency, add Dang Gui Radix Angelicae Sinensis 10 g to tonify the Blood and nourish the hair.
2. If there is an obvious shortness of breath, pale complexion and tiredness due to Qi deficiency, add Shan Yao Rhizoma Dioscorea 10 g to activate the Spleen and tonify the Qi.
3. If there is distension of the breast, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 12 g and Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi 10 g to promote the Qi circulation and relieve the distension.
4. If there is cramp in the breast, add Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae Alba 12 g together with Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata 6 g to relieve the cramp.
5. If there is coldness in the abdomen, hands and feet, add Rou Gui Cortex Cinnamomi 5 g and Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis 5 g to warm the Interior and dispel Cold.
6. If there is insomnia, add Bai Zi Ren Semen Biotae 10 g and Ye Jiao Teng Caulis Polygoni Multiflori 15 g to nourish the Heart-Blood and tranquillise the Mind.
