To safely start a rocket motor, you should always use an electric igniter, also called a squib, or an electric match. Electric igniters come in many forms and sizes, but the basic operating principle is always the same. A thin, metal fuse wire, or sometimes a strip of foil, is embedded in a pyrotechnic composition. When an electric current passes through the wire, the wire gets hot and lights the composition, which then ignites the rocket motor. There are many ways to make an igniter, and this is how I make them.
