The Anterior and Lateral Torso (Sculpting a Figure) (Digital Sculpting with Mudbox)

The main features on the anterior torso are the rectus abdominis muscles. Then, coming around from the back to the lateral aspect of the torso are the latissimus dorsi muscles. Anterior to the latissimus are the serratus anterior muscles and the external oblique in the lower lateral torso (Figure 4.15). Use the Sculpt, Wax, and Smooth tools to build up and blend the rectus abdominis muscles, as shown in Figure 4.16. Then, use the Contrast and the Pinch tools to define the intersections between the rectus abdominis muscles and the linea alba. Although the rectus abdominis is often referred to as a six-pack, there are usually eight sections, four on either side. The proximal aspect of the rectus abdominis originates at the inferior edges of the fifth or sixth ribs and the sternum and inserts inferiorly at the pubis (pelvis). Because the most proximal section of the rectus abdominis overlays a few of the ribs, it is not smooth but, instead, follows the contours or the ribs.

Using the Grab tool, pull out the latissimus laterally, and then, push in the torso in front of the latissimus. At the current subdivision level, you will be able to suggest the serratus anterior muscles, but not much more detail. Nonetheless, use the Wax tool to build up the serratus as shown in Figure 4.16. Typically, there are three to five visible digitations or sections of the serratus anterior muscle. The uppermost and longest visible digitation of serratus anterior is tucked under the pectoralis major and the subsequent lower digitations are shorter.

The Anterior and Lateral Torso Is Composed of the Rectus Abdominis, the Latissimus Dorsi, Serratus Anterior, and External Oblique.

Build Up the Muscles of the Torso with the Wax and Sculpt Tools, Blend with the Smooth Tool. Then Use the Contrast and Pinch Tools to Make the Muscle Groups Distinct. Use the Grab Tool to Sculpt the Latissimus Dorsi.

The inferior aspect of the external oblique inserts along the anterior half of iliac crest of the pelvis. Sculpt this muscle as shown in Figure 4.16. After further subdivision, more detail will be added to the serratus anterior and external oblique muscles and the torso, overall. Next, you will sculpt the general shapes of the posterior lower torso.
