ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

LR-2 Xingjian, SP-9 Yinlingquan, KI-2 Rangu, KI-10 Yingu, BL-18 Ganshu and CV-2 Qugu. Reducing method is used on these points.

Explanations

•    LR-2, the Spring point of the Liver channel, eliminates Damp-Heat in the channel.

•    SP-9, the Sea point of the Spleen channel, removes Damp-Heat and activates the Spleen.

•    KI-2, the Spring point of the Kidney channel, and KI-10, the Sea point, promote urination and eliminate Damp-Heat.

•    BL-18, the Back Transporting point of the Liver, reduces Liver-Fire.

•    CV-2, the crossing point of the Directing Vessel and the Liver channel, regulates the circulation of Qi in these two channels, eliminates Damp-Heat and relieves the pain.

Modifications

1.    If there is a painful perineum, add CV-I and KI-6 to clear Damp-Heat and relieve the pain in the perineum.

2.    If there are swollen genitals, add SP-6 to eliminate Damp-Heat and reduce the swelling.

3.    If the testicles are painful, add ST-29 and LR-12 to regulate the Qi, remove its stagnation and relieve the pain.

4.    If there is a painful vagina with leucorrhoea, add ST-30 and HT-8 to eliminate Damp-Heat and relieve the pain.

5.    If there is painful urination, add KI-4 and LR-5 to clear Damp-Heat, promote urination and relieve the pain.


6.    If there is lower back pain, add BL-23 and BL-58 to strengthen the lower back and relieve the pain.

STAGNATION OF LIVER-QI

Symptoms and signs

Painful copulation, lower abdominal pain with distension, hypochondriac pain, headache, dizziness, palpitations, irregular menstruation, a poor appetite, a feeling of fullness in the stomach, irritability, insomnia, a white and thin tongue coating and a wiry pulse.

Principle of treatment

Regulate the Liver-Qi, remove Qi stagnation and relieve the pain.

Modifications

1.    If there is lower abdominal pain, add Wu Yao Radix Linderae 5 g and Ju He Semen Citri Reticulatae 10 g to regulate the circulation of Qi and relieve the pain.

2.    If there is a sharp pain, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizonm Corydalis 10 g and Mo Yao Resina Myrrhae 10 g to promote the circulation of Qi and relieve the pain.

3.    If there is low potency, add Yu Jin Radix Curcumae 10 g and Wu Gong Scolopendra 3 g to regulate the Qi and Blood circulation in the Liver channel and improve the potency.

Explanations

•    LR-3, the Source and Stream point of the Liver channel, and LR-8, the Sea point, regulate the Liver-Qi in order to relieve the pain.

•    BL-18, the Back Transporting point of the Liver channel, smoothes the Liver, regulates the Liver-Qi and removes Qi stagnation in the channel.

•    CV-3, the crossing point of the Liver channel and the three Yin channels of the foot, relieves the pain.

•    PC-6, the Connecting point of the Pericardium channel and the Confluence point of the Yin Linking Vessel, regulates the circulation of Qi and removes its stagnation.

•    GB-20 calms the Mind and regulates the circulation of Qi.

Modifications

1.    If there is hypochondriac pain, add TE-5 and GB-41 to regulate the circulation of Qi and relieve the pain.

2.    If there is lower abdominal pain, add ST-29 and BL-25 to regulate the circulation of Qi in the locality and relieve the pain.

3.    If there is low potency, add KI-10, the Sea point, and SP-6, the crossing point of the three Yin channels of the foot, to tonify the Kidney and regulate the Liver in order to improve the potency.

4.    If there is irregular menstruation, add SP-10 and KI-3 to regulate the menstruation.

5.    If there is insomnia, add HT-7 to calm the Mind and improve the sleep.

6.    If there is irritability, add LR-3 and HT-8, the Spring points, to clear Heat from the Liver and Heart and calm the Mind.

Case history

A 52-year-old woman had been suffering from painful copulation for 2 months. She complained she had a dry and painful feeling during sexual intercourse. She also stated that she got this complaint soon after she was terrified by a group of thugs at home. She was very upset about this situation. She went to the hospital and was given some tranquillisers. Besides painful copulation, she also had a headache, nervousness, a dry sensation in her eyes, palpitations, a poor appetite and lower abdominal pain. Her tongue was red with a thin coating, and her pulse was wiry.

Diagnosis

Stagnation of Liver-Qi with formation of Liver-Fire. Principle of treatment

Smooth the Liver, remove Qi stagnation and clear Liver-Fire.

After 2 months of treatment, her painful copulation was relieved completely. She was followed up 2 years later and she stated that she had experienced no further painful copulation since the treatment.

DEFICIENCY OF SPLEEN-QI

Symptoms and signs

Gradual occurrence of painful copulation, a low sexual drive, lassitude, a pale complexion, a poor appetite, diarrhoea, palpitations, prolapse of the uterus or anus, irregular menstruation, menorrhagia, a pale tongue with a white coating and a feeble pulse. Usually these patients have some chronic disease, weak constitution, malnutrition or a history of multiple births.

•    Ju Pi promotes the circulation of Qi in the Middle Burner and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach.

Modifications

1.    If there is low potency, add Yin Yang Huo Herba Epimedii 10 g and Wu Gong Scolopendra I g to regulate the circulation of Blood and improve the potency.

2.    If there is menorrhagia, add Bai Ji Rhizoma Bletillae 10 g, San Qi Radix Notoginseng IOg and Xue Yu Tan Crinis Carbonisatus 10 g to stop the bleeding.

LR-3 Taichong, KI-3 Taixi, CV-4 Guanyuan, CV-12 Zhongwan, BL-20 Pishu and ST-36 Zusanli. Reinforcing method is used on these points. Moxibustion treatment is recommended on CV-4, KI-3 and ST-36.

Explanations

•    LR-3 is the Stream and Source point of the Liver channel. KI-3 is the Stream and Source point of the Kidney channel. These two points in combination can tonify the Liver and Kidney.

•    BL-20 is the Back Transporting point of the Spleen. ST-36 is the Sea point of the Stomach channel.

CV-12 is the Front Collecting point of the Stomach, the Gathering point for the Fu organs, and the crossing point of the Directing Vessel with the three Yang channels of the hand. These three points in combination tonify the Spleen and Stomach-Qi.

•    CV-4 tonifies the Original Qi and improves the constitution.

•    Moxibustion tonifies the Qi and warms the interior organs.

Modifications

1.    If the appetite is poor, add SP-3, the Source point, to tonify the Spleen-Qi and improve the appetite.

2.    If there is low potency, add CV-6 and LR-5 to tonify the Kidney and regulate the circulation of Qi.

3.    If there are palpitations, add PC-6 and HT-3 to calm the Mind and stop the palpitations.

4.    If there is prolapse of the anus or uterus, add GV-20 and moxibustion on CV-8 to tonify and lift the Yang-Qi.

7.    If there is constipation, add ST-25 and ST-37 to regulate the Large Intestine and promote defecation.

Case history

A 55-year-old man had been suffering from pain on copulation for 5 months. He had been suffering with chronic prostitis for about 2 years, and lately often had pain on copulation with itching of his penis. Sometimes he also suffered from impotence. Meanwhile, he had lower back pain with soreness, frequent and scanty urination, lassitude, a dry mouth with a bitter taste in his mouth, night sweating, restlessness, occasional headache, a red tongue with a scanty coating and a wiry and rapid pulse.

Diagnosis

Deficiency of Kidney-Yin and flaring-up of Liver-Fire. Principle of treatment

Nourish Kidney-Yin and reduce Liver-Fire.

Acupuncture treatment

LR-3, LR-8, KI-3, CV-3, SP-6 and BL-23. LR-3 and LR-8 were needled with reducing method. Kl-3, CV-3, SP-6 and BL-23 were needled with reinforcing method. Treatment was carried out once every other day.

Explanations

•    LR-3 is the Stream and Source point of the Liver channel. LR-8 is the Sea point. These two points in combination reduce Liver-Fire resulting from deficiency of Kidney-Yin.

•    KI-3 is the Stream and Source point of the Kidney channel. BL-23 is the Back Transporting point of the Kidney. These two points in combination tonify the Kidney-Yin.

• CV-3 is the crossing point of the Directing Vessel and the three Yin channels of the foot. SP-6 is the crossing point of the three Yin channels of the foot. These two points in combination nourish the Yin and regulate the circulation of Qi in the Lower Burner to relieve the painful copulation.

After 6 weeks of treatment, his painful copulation was under control.
