Port Replicators (Networking)

A port replicator is a device that a laptop or notebook computer plugs into for the purpose of instantly connecting to full-size peripherals—including a keyboard, monitor, and printer (Figure 101).

For example, if a computer is used both at home and at work, a port replicator could be set up at both locations. Plugging the notebook computer into the port replicator at either location would give the user instant access to the desktop computer’s peripherals, including its keyboard, monitor, and mouse—all without having to remove cables from the desktop computer and attach them to the notebook. Since all the peripherals plug into the back of the replicator, the notebook can be removed without unplugging all the cables.

In addition to serial and parallel ports, the port replicator typically has mouse and keyboard ports as well as a power port. Many port replicators also include a VGA port for an external monitor, so users are not limited to a small laptop screen, as well as a port for an external floppy disk drive. Some units also include an RJ11 modem jack, audio input/output ports, and a MIDI/joystick port for playing games. Newer port replicators now include a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port.

Most notebook computer manufacturers offer a port replicator as an additional option, but they work only with that vendor’s products. Now there are “universal” port replicators that work with virtually any notebook computer. Mobility Electronics, for example, offers a universal port replicator called the EasiDock. The EasiDock’s cable ends in a PC Card, which simply slides into the notebook’s Type II PC Card slot.

Last Word

A port replicator is an easy and economical way to convert a laptop into a desktop computer. It allows laptop users to take advantage of full-size desktop computer components (such as a keyboard or monitor) without having to plug in each device separately. Port replicators are also called docking stations. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, a docking station is different in that it also provides slots for adding expansion boards and storage devices. One of the slots can be used for an Ethernet adapter, giving it a direct connection to the network via an RJ45 connector (UTP) or a BNC (coaxial) connector.
