Housings, also known as frames, come in all types of materials and configurations. Basically, the housings are made in the same way for both ac and dc motors. The basic purpose of the housing is to cover the stator or pole-piece assembly, provide heat transfer and protection, provide a location for mounting the end frames, and serve as an attachment for other components, such as outlet boxes and lifting hooks.
