An estimated 90 percent of Ironton, Ohio, was covered by the 1937 floodwaters. Ironton, the
county seat of Lawrence County, is on the far side of the Ohio in this aerial view. A flooded
Ashland, Kentucky, can be seen at the bottom left of the photograph. The flood completely
isolated Ironton from highway and rail travel, and drove more than 600 people from their
homes.
This souvenir postcard shows a stretch of Ironton's South Third Street as it looked during
the 1937 flood and then as it looked after the water receded, the mud was cleared away, and
