things restored to normal. Note the hanging “Drugs” sign. In the flood photograph, the
rising water has all but reached it. The card itself was issued by Rist's, the drugstore shown.
At least five buildings in downtown Ironton were so weakened by the 1937 flood that they
collapsed. Another, the Hudon-Pillar Hardware at Second and Lawrence Streets, was a
mass of brick and burned timber after a midnight fire at the height of the flood. This build-
ing at Second and Center Streets housed the Kiddie Shop before it collapsed. The sidewalk
and street are dry, so it appears this photograph was taken several days after the water
went down.
Ironton's Bunn Building at North Second and Railroad Streets collapsed on February 2,
crushing and killing Agnes Jones, Ironton's only direct fatality in the flood. Alarmed about
the safety of several houses and business buildings, city officials conducted an emergency
inspection and directed that 25 of them be immediately demolished. Urgent repairs were
ordered for a long list of other structures.
