Founded by abolitionist Eli Thayer in 1857 and a Union stronghold during the Civil War,
the village of Ceredo is located on the Ohio River just west of Huntington and is today
primarily a residential community. As this aerial view shows, the January 1937 flood inund-
ated much of the village. The photographer was facing north, with the Ohio River at the top

Kenova is the westernmost community in West Virginia. It is located across the Ohio River
from Ohio and across the Big Sandy River from Kentucky. Its name is derived from those of
