In-Depth Information
When the 1913 flood reached Cincinnati, Ohio, the river rose 21 feet in 24 hours, flooding
homes, businesses, and factories. The damage was enormous. Nevertheless, the anonymous
writer of the caption on this postcard of the city's flooded railroad yards clearly got carried
away when he or she labeled it the “Greatest Flood in Worlds History.”
As its name suggests, the Marietta Manufacturing Company originally was located in Mari-
etta, Ohio, but after it was badly damaged by the 1913 flood, it moved downstream to Point
Pleasant, West Virginia, where it was located on high ground. That kept the boatbuilder dry
during most floods. But, as seen here, the 1933 flood partially submerged it. For a view of
Marietta Manufacturing during the 1937 flood, see page 50. (Courtesy Point Pleasant River
Museum.)
