When the Ohio flooded much of Louisville, Kentucky, in 1907, the U.S. Coast Guard went
into action and evacuated more than 400 people to safety. The coast guard also distributed
food and fuel to hundreds more, transported physicians, performed ambulance duty, and
even helped the mail get through by transporting the city's letter carriers.
