Founder Alexander H. Creel named St. Mary's, the county seat of Pleasants County, West
Virginia, in honor of the Virgin Mary. Creel said Mary appeared to him in a vision one
night as the steamboat on which he was traveling passed the point where he afterward es-
tablished the town. Here a curious crowd checks out the high water during the 1907 flood.
