In-Depth Information
In Evansville, Locust Street and the Hotel McCurdy at the riverside became a handy impro-
vised harbor for U.S. Coast Guard craft and other boats used in the rescue effort. A wooden
catwalk was built from the hotel to the nearby Elks Club. Built in 1917, the 300-room hotel
was a showplace. Its popular Rose Room ballroom was known for its romantic views of the
river. In January 1937, however, the view was anything but romantic.
