Figure 4.41. Use of synthetic seismograms in the determination of oceanic crustal
structure. Synthetic seismograms were calculated using the 'reflectivity' method
for four oceanic crustal models, all of which have first-arrival travel times that fit the
observed times. Each seismogram is calculated for the charge size used in the
original experiment - hence the variable amplitude-distance behaviour. All
record sections are reduced to 6 km s −1 . All models include 2.6 km of sea water
