In-Depth Information
The number of beds in hotels and other accommodation facilities is low compared
to the rest of Turkey. During July and August there is full capacity. Almost all
accommodation facilities were established in the ancient city areas according to land
and planning constraints. National and international environmental organizations
and scientists studying the protection of Caretta caretta turtles have played a major
role in the increase of tourism. Mud baths and hot springs are among the other major
tourist attractions.
Fishery
Fishery activities are carried out in Koycegiz, Alagol, Suluklugol, and Sulungur
Lakes, and along the Iztuzu coast by means of a cooperative (DALKO), which has
507 shareholders and 60 employees. Fish production fluctuates. Mullet, which has
economic value, is found in the sea near the coast, but during the breeding period
adult mullet travel to brackish streams and lagoons and their offspring grow here.
One third of adults (300 t per year) are caught as they travel to brackish waters, and
they are used in caviar production.
Forestry
The majority of the watershed is covered with forests, which are of major economic
value. Between the years 1970-1991, 13,748 ha of land was forested. A total of
750-850 ha is planted annually.
Public Services
Public service is developed in Koycegiz because it is a district center. Almost 700
people are employed in the public service sector, mostly in municipal posts, forestry
administration, education, and medical services.
Industry and Trade
There is no major industrial activity in the watershed. Cotton gins process cotton
collected from the neighborhood villages. Almost all companies are small scale and
located in the “Koycegiz small industry site.” Koytas is a moderate-scale enterprise
that produces equipment for agricultural activities and municipality services. A fish-
processing factory has been established in Beyobasi. A citrus fruit processing com-
pany is important because it provides jobs during the winter and exports provide
economic income. Trading activities that parallel tourism activities are developed in
both Koycegiz and Dalyan.
9.5.1.1.2.7 Income and Manpower Distribution
A total of 78% of the population in Koycegiz is involved in agriculture; it is the major
source of income in the rural regions. Tourism is the major source of income for
Dalyan. Interestingly, the education level and social activities are more developed in
Koycegiz than in Dalyan, and they constitute a positive contribution to the increase
in income in Koycegiz.
9.5.1.1.3 Pollution Sources and Waste Loads
A detailed study including site visits, surveys, office work, and laboratory work was
conducted to calculate nutrients and pesticide loads in the system. During on-site visits
information was gathered from both the District Directorates of Agriculture of Koycegiz
and Ortaca and the pesticide dealers. Laboratory studies for residual pesticide analysis
