In-Depth Information
Be very careful when crossing the street in this city. Drivers come first here. They've de-
cided that, so remember that cars come from the left, to use crosswalks and wait for the
green man to be safe. Striped crossings or zebra crossings like the one at Abbey Road re-
quire drivers to stop for pedestrians at all times, not just for lights.
Food
I've recommended a few restaurants at various points of this itinerary, but this city has end-
less options, so be adventurous. Below are five items you can't leave Britain without try-
ing.
Full English Breakfast: I didn't recommend breakfast in this itinerary as some
don't eat it and most just grab something at the hotel, but you can't leave London
without trying a Full English, which includes eggs, toast, grilled tomato, potatoes,
baked beans, mushrooms, sausage, bacon and black pudding. You can fit one into
this itinerary at the start of day two. Kensington High Street is packed with cafes
and restaurants, so take your pick.
Fish and Chips: This is the dish England is usually associated with, so you must
try it. It's affordable and especially good beer-battered. You can find this item at
pubs and takeaway shops around the city. Fit it into this itinerary on day one at
Gabriel's Wharf.
Bangers and Mash: An alternative to the option above, this dish is made up of
sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy. A hearty meal and another option for those
who want traditional British pub food, but don't like fish.
Savory pies: England favors the savory, rather than sweet pies. Common pies in-
clude cottage pie, which has beef and is covered in mashed potato, mince pie,
which has beef with spices and different curry pies. You can purchase pies just
about anywhere. They're cheap and great if you're on the go. In this itinerary, try
a fresh pie at Pieminister or Harrods food court.
Chicken Tikka Masala : As we mention in day two, Chicken Tikka Masala is actu-
ally England's most popular dish. It's pieces of chicken cooked in a creamy, spiced
orange sauce, served with rice. Like pies, there are a million different curries to
suit your taste buds. They're not all spicy either. If it's your first time trying Indian
food, make sure to order some naan, flat bread, to go with the meal.
