gical and historical items, including well-crafted pottery, spear points and materials on
early South African Boer immigrants.
Tours
Several agencies arrange trips to Bosque Petrificado Sarmiento and Cueva de las Manos.
Ruta 40 TOUR
( 0294-452-3378; www.ruta-40.com ) If you're really up for a road trip, contact Ruta 40.
The small, multilingual outfitter is based in Bariloche but with some tours starting in Co-
modoro, like the eight-day journey Ruta 40 tour, with stops at Puerto Deseado, Cueva de
las Manos and several lovely estancias before ending up in El Calafate. Consult for cur-
rent rates and departure dates.
Circuito Ferroportuario TOUR
The urban train tour Circuito Ferroportuario takes visitors on a circuit from the
tourism office to visit containers, warehouses, historical installations and workshops on
the port.
Sleeping
Catering mainly to business travelers and long-term laborers, lodging here fits two cat-
egories: the ritzy and the run-down. Brisk business means lodgings are overpriced and
often full - book ahead.
Hotel Victoria HOTEL $$$
( 446-0725; www.hotelvictoriacrd.com.ar ; Belgra no 585; s/d/tr AR$460/595/715) The friend-
liest hotel on the block, with soothing, good-sized rooms with firm twin beds, desks and
cable TV, but oddly without internet. If the aroma of baking pastries is any indication, it's
worth taking breakfast.
