(AR$45) even if you're not planning a trip.
Festivals & Events
Tilcara celebrates several festivals during the year, the most notable of which is January's
Enero Tilcareño , with sports, music and cultural activities. August's indigenous
Pachamama (Mother Earth) festival is also worthwhile.
Sleeping
There's a huge variety, with numerous upmarket boutique hotels and dozens of simple
hostels, guesthouses, and good-value rooms in private homes (the tourist office keeps a
list of these).
Malka GUESTHOUSE, HOSTEL $
( 495-5197; www.malkahostel.com.ar ; San Martín s/n, Barrio Malka; dm/d AR$115/400, cabin for
4 AR$650; ) This rustic complex is a special place, both hotel and hostel. The wel-
coming owners, secluded, shady situation, thoughtfully different dorms, and smart stone-
clad rooms with hammocks and deckchairs out front make it the sort of retreat you end
up staying longer in than you expected. A relaxing yoga room with courses is another
reason to linger. Good breakfast included and HI discount.
Facing the church, head left for a block, then turn right and follow this road.
Antigua Tilcara GUESTHOUSE, HOSTEL $

s/d superior AR$300/500; ) Run with real enthusiasm and offering a genuine
welcome, this excellent place offers a spacious dorm with single beds and two grades of
room, both handsome. Superiors are worth the small extra investment for extra space and
views. There's a great cafe-bar area with vistas, cracking breakfasts, a small kitchen, and
various sustainable practices. A top place.
